Biography & Memoir • 10.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1971

Eric Newby's charming story is about his life among Italian villagers as they helped him after his escape from the Germans at the end of World War II. The tale is full of memorable characters and Newby's legacy is a gentle humanism and delight in these people. Whitworth conveys this interest with his accomplished narration. His British voice is a good match for Newby's own and the rhythm of his pace echoes the simplicity of the life Newby led. Very poor editing of the recording mars an otherwise delightful piece. The audiobook can still be enjoyed as a glimpse into a unique time and place of great character. R.F.W. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: MAR 94]
