The stories read herein exemplify the genre of the literary watercolor. In pale, delicately drawn scenes of modern life, evocative and elusive, not much really happens, but what does transpire somehow contains significance. Carole Boyd reads in mellifluous BBC diction, drawing out the china-vase prettiness of the lines and displaying a considerable gift for character voices. Unfortunately, her dynamic range is so wide that if one cranks up the volume to hear her pianissimo, one is blasted by the next fortissimo. It is practically impossible to follow her while driving, even with windows shut against outside noise. Y.R. © AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/NOV 99]
