THE MAMUR ZAPT AND THE NIGHT OF THE DOG

Turn-of-the-century Cairo is evoked in author Pearce's intriguing mystery series featuring the Mamur Zapt, the equivalent of an English Criminal Investigation Detective (CID). Gareth Cadwallader Owen carries out his duties conscientiously but nervously, aware of the tensions among the native Moslems, the Copts and the British. Narrator Simon Prebble brings the characters to life from Owen's point of view. The Egyptian-accented English is convincing, even the women's voices--British Jane Postlethwaite and Egyptian Zeinab. Prebble enables the listener to imagine the drama of the Zikh ritual dance, the hubbub of the bazaar, and the terribly civilized British club in the midst of the Empire's outpost.
