THE MEASURE OF OUR SUCCESS

Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, uses three distinct tonal qualities for the three sections of her work. In the brief introductory section, the autobiography, her pleasant alto voice is matter-of-fact. For the second section, a letter to her sons, her tone is often sharper, more quickly paced and forceful. In the third section, the twenty-five lessons, her “words knock on the houses of our souls.” Here the rich variety in tone is emotionally evocative. Her voice never distracts from her meaning nor interferes with the importance of her message. This is a valuable listening experience which can well be heard again and again.
