These 19 related stories take place in the underground of the mythical city of Newford, where characters wander into each other's stories. The characters find magic around them as they make their own way outside the mainstream as artists, street musicians, mermaids, and spirits of the night. Kate Reading tells their stories as if she knows her characters well and is familiar with their tales. She uses pace, timing, and tone to reflect the personalities of the main characters without neglecting the minor players.
