ON THE GRIND

Disgraced detective Shane Scully has no choice but to accept a job offer from the Haven Park Police Department, otherwise known as the mayor's personal goon squad. With rejects, low-lifes, and once-proud investigators, the unit proves to be more than Scully can handle. It's too bad he cheated on his ex-wife. Now he needs her help to stay alive, but she isn't a very forgiving person. Narrator Scott Brick makes Scully—an easily detestable lead—an empathetic character by pulling his voice back to an underplayed, remorseful monotone that is undeniably affecting. Brick's ability to dig beneath the surface of one-dimensional supporting characters is astounding, making the story flow at a steady pace and sound more credible.
