Minnesota offers ample opportunity for relaxation, recreation, and murder. All 13 stories in this collection by Minnesota mystery writers are set amid the cabins, cottages, and condominiums on Minnesota's reputed 10,000 lakes. William Kent Krueger's "Hills Like White Rabbits," narrated with dry austerity by John Farrell, tells of a bitter writer convinced that his wife plans to kill him. Joel Arnold's "Leave No Wake," about an elderly resort owner who solves the murder of a young stripper, is read with gentle depth and sensitivity by Walt Weaver. "The Locked Fish-Cleaning House Mystery," by Jess Lourey and read by Heidi Ziman, is a funny fish-tale of a nursing home escapee who crashes a wedding party and solves a murder. The stories are all of high quality, but, while all the narrators give adequate readings, none of them particularly stand out, and none capture the distinct speaking style associated with Minnesotans.
