A CIVIL WAR TRINITY What I Saw of Shiloh; Gettysburg; A Campaign That Failed

by | Read by Timothy Patrick Miller

Classics/ Short Stories • 2.75 hrs. • Unabridged Selections • © 2009

This trilogy of two relatively unknown and one well-known accounts of the Civil War is brought to life by narrator Timothy Miller. He skillfully gives each of these three reminiscences a different voice. Bierce's recollections of the Battle of Shiloh, written in a style that sounds quaint and old-fashioned, are given a matter-of-fact delivery. Twain's tale of his failed attempt to be a Confederate guerilla is given a lively and expressive performance. It’s gravelly and winsome—what one expects from Miller as Twain. Johnston, a famous author in her day and the daughter and niece of Confederate officers, provides an account of Gettysburg, excerpted from her fiction. Miller's reading is skillful in rendering both narrative and dialogue. Sound effects and music make these all quite a delight. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2009]
