Subtitled A Novel About Village Life, this story contains divorce, marriage, flirtation, National Health, busybodies, gossip, geriatric illness and academe. It's up to Lynne Verrall to sort out the many characters and present them to us with the care or offhandedness they deserve. She does very well with the task, even though she assigns low and unappealing voices to some of the characters who deserve more understanding. The story is a continuation from a previous work and, if we listen closely at the end of the tape, we might hear the suggested promise of a future scenario from the town of Round Ringford.
