Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, engineer, inventor, and thinker of unparalleled talent and depth. This one-volume biography, originally published in 1945, offers a solid overview of his adult life and work. Robert Mansell offers an energetic, emotive reading that comes close to but does not devolve into caricature. The author creates conversations between Leonardo and several historical figures, and Mansell reads them with animation, giving each speaker a distinctive voice, which helps the listener. The weakness is in the book's recounting of actions and dialogue of which there is no record. But Mansell clearly has fun with the book, which will carry the listener along.
