This installment of Hubbard's Tales from the Golden Age brings us to an unconventional Wild West. Michael Patrick Obannon, a second-generation Irish-American landowner, finds his 100,000-acre estate claimed by outlaw Americans. Outgunned and outnumbered, Obannon is forced to rely on his wits and charm to protect his people and lawful inheritance. This portrait of the West is rendered in a rich soundscape of clapping hooves, thundering guns, and Spanish guitar interludes. R.F. Daley's voice carries us through the majesty of the tale, and a full cast of actors enriches the accents and attitudes of individual characters. While there's no shortage of heroes and villains, the story remains blessedly free of stereotypes. Pure pulp adventure—in the best way!—from start to finish.
