Narrator Ted Barker sits tall in the saddle as he lets loose a cast of Wild West characters, his voice moving from character to character—from the wise old codger to the nasty rustler to the boy who is learning the ways of mountain trails and sandstorms. Barker treats this 1952 novel about a Chicago teen who yearns for his own horse with the easy affection of a cowpoke moseying up to the chuck wagon. In doing so, he makes this 60-year-old classic feel fresh and new. It's great fun to go along for the ride as young Pete captures and tames his own horse, rescues his uncle, defeats villains, and proves he deserves his spurs—even though he would NEVER use them.
