P.I. Kiernan O’Shaughnessy’s determination, short temper, and inability to suffer fools are brought to the fore as she investigates a possible deadly epidemic. Having recently split with her assistant, she thinks herself on her own, but he is also investigating a part of the puzzle, without her approval. C.M. Herbert so perfectly captures Kiernan’s frustration and stubborn self-reliance that one can almost hear her teeth grinding. Her sometimes dry tone warms to intense emotion as the story warrants, and relaxes to capture Brad’s easy way with people--a quality Kiernan sorely lacks.
