When Ellie White, longtime resident of Eastport, Maine, confesses to murdering a local billionaire with an ice pick, she’s promptly thrown in jail, and Jacobia Tiptree is promptly suspicious. Determined to prove her friend's innocence, Jacobia (Jake) begins making her own inquiries and soon finds herself the object of threats and attacks. In portraying Jake, narrator Lindsay Ellison captures the sardonic tone of a strong, independent woman who is both amused and irritated by human behavior (including her own). Her voicing of Jake's teenage son is realistic, and her portrayal of Ellie's bossy elderly mother is at times hilarious. Pauses between chapters are a little long, but, overall, the leisurely narration suits the pace of life described in the community of Moose Island.
