ONCE A RUNNER

by | Read by Patrick Lawlor

Fiction • 9 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2009

Parker's 1970s novel about an athlete who is becoming a world-class runner holds up well. Quenton Cassidy, a student at a fictional Southern college, is both a leader among his peers and a lone wolf. In his training, he slowly learns to become faster at a sport that allows no fudging or faking: All you have is your time at the finish line. Patrick Lawlor doesn't vary voices well, but he excels with his high energy. A few minor voices come off well; for example, a football coach's words come out in a gravelly drawl. But the two main characters—Cassidy and his coach—are close in tone. Still, Lawlor never stops creating forward momentum in this introspective, humorous novel.
