In WRITING PLACES, Bill Zinsser practices what he often teaches: writing the memoir. In examining his life of writing, reporting, and teaching, he displays the brevity and clarity he espouses in his seminal work, ON WRITING WELL. The willingness of a man who honed his writing skill at the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE in the 1950s to record a downloadable audiobook demonstrates Zinsser's willingness to change with the times. Clearly, Zinsser is not a professional narrator. His voice is slightly nasal. As he reads, his sentences come out crisp and short, but he sometimes has trouble finding the best place to breathe. Occasionally, he rushes. Despite these minor flaws, the overall effect is enjoyable. The author imparts meaning another narrator could not.
