Juno Marlowe is alone, without a caring family or friends, during a night of fierce bombing in London. She helps a stranger to his home, and he writes a letter for her to carry to his family. The rest is made delectable by the voice of Samuel West. A good reader like West leaves the creation of the character to the author. His contribution is subtle coloration and artistic interpretation that doesn't interfere with our own image of the work. He leaves himself in the background, merely a messenger. An outstanding performance like West's makes the story what one remembers. J.P. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine [Published: APR/MAY 00]
