PAUL GAUGUIN: A LIFE

This extended scholarly work is unusually listenable, thanks to the lively clarity of the writing (as well as the lively subject), which makes details seem rich, rather than tedious. David Case gives an animated, intelligent reading in an archetypically upper-class British voice, which is very comfortable for extended listening. He pronounces French beautifully, and Spanish with an appropriate heavy French accent. His manner is (for these American ears) a bit supercilious, but one becomes less aware of this as time goes on.
