In this engrossing story, Cat tries living like her ancient ancestors (no junk food or high-tech tools) and is thoroughly transformed. The smooth-voiced Kirsten Potter handles the narration of this story well. Her pacing highlights the elements of drama, mystery (what exactly did Matt DO to Cat back in sixth grade?), and romance. Potter's characterizations are a bit jarring at times, though—Cat's voice is often so sarcastic that it undercuts moments of poignancy. Further, Potter’s attempt at male teen voices are a bit strained. This production includes a long conversation between Brande and the director of Compassionate Cooks, which offers fascinating insights into how Brande's practice of veganism prompted her to write this book.
