Nottingham is savage with gangs and traffickers of women and guns and drugs. Inspector Charlie Resnick and his partner, Lynn Kellogg—also a police officer—are plunged into the middle of this deadly mess. Narrator Nick Boulton is expertly subtle with a range of accents, so many of them from immigrants newly arrived in England. Listeners with American ears may have some difficulty as he portrays a panoply of characters with different backgrounds and of different ages and levels of education. Nonetheless, Boulton’s solid performance helps listeners visualize the cityscape and empathize with the emotions and plot of this disturbing mystery.
