PULP PHYSICS Volume I— Astronomy

by | Read by Richard Berendzen

Contemporary Culture • 8 hrs. • Audio Program • © 2000

The Publishing Mills’s elegant, functional packaging promises far more than the author delivers in his introduction to the history of astronomy and physics from the pre-Socratics to the twentieth-century space program. The listener is subjected to nasal and mouth noises, as well as sharp, whistling “s” sounds, which worsen the effects of the author’s dry lecture style. His efforts to create suspense at various scientific mile-stones with dramatic pauses and reverent tones are distracting and contrived. The story is meant to be a novice-level, “pulp” account of important chapters in the history of science, but this production will have difficulty keeping its audience’s attention.
