But he soon finds himself walking on quicksand in this dark, richly textured, rather cynical tale of post-Cold War espionage. James Faulkner performs with the restrained virtuosity of a deeply seasoned professional who is long past showing off and has placed himself completely at the service of his material. Under his perfect control, the story seems to tell itself, moving relentlessly to a painfully ironic ending.
