RACING PIGS AND GIANT MARROWS Travels Around the North Country Fairs

by | Read by Harry Pearson

Contemporary Culture • 7.1 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1996

The author/narrator spent an entire summer gracing the fairs of England's northern counties. While en route he conscientiously recorded his observations and musings. Not only are the fair-goers intriguing, but the war of the leek growers (as to which is the biggest and best), the debate over chrysanthemums versus dahlias, and the ostrich that according to townspeople resembles Keanu Reeves add more than a little dash to these observations of simple things. The north accents are wonderful just by themselves, and Pearson's understatement and irony are hilarious. However, the listener must pay close attention because subtleties are easily missed.
