Clare Boothe Luce used her considerable beauty and brains to acquire wealth, notoriety and a significant niche in the annals of publishing, American politics and Broadway. The narrator is perfectly cast. Her reading is clever and clear. She shows a little attitude, too--her cultured tone has a faintly ironic edge as she describes Luce's determined scaling of the ladder toward fame. The entire performance seems ever so slightly calculated--just like every move of its subject's life. Juicy and fascinating, even if you're not usually a biography fan.
