Detective Emme Caldwell and her daughter, Chloe, are running for their lives in the second of the Mercy Street series. Narrator Joyce Bean brings genuine emotion to Emme's efforts to hide from Chloe's father, a drug lord, and to investigate a kidnapping. Using unique voices for Emme, Chloe, and Emme's colleagues, Bean constructs appealing characters with memorable personalities. She maintains the story's suspense as Emme discovers clues that uncover the kidnapper's identity. A measured quality to Bean’s narration makes it sometimes stiff, and pauses between speakers of dialogue cause the story slow in places. For romantic suspense listeners, a solid story combined with consistent narration makes this a worthwhile performance as a stand-alone or as part of the series.
