After his mother's death, Eliot and his father move from Florida to England, trying to make a normal life. Once there, the grieving boy is sent to live with cousins. His discovery that their house is haunted by Mary-Ellen--whose sanity was endangered by the loss of her fiancé, Orlando Rinaldi, in WWI--forces Eliot to try to change events that happened long ago. Although Parker's shifts between American and British accents often seem awkward, he ably conveys the mystery and intrigue of the story. His voice plumbs the depths of Eliot and Mary-Ellen's despair, while his voicing of minor characters carries the listener into a community that is still trying to come to grips with the loss of so many of its young men during a terrible war.
