In the wrong hands, Reiken’s complex, innovative novel, which connects 10 characters, could certainly fail, resulting in an audiobook impossible for listeners to follow. Instead, Laural Merlington and George Wilson triumph in their narrations. At the beginning, both Merlington and Wilson assume seemingly straightforward personas. But as the characters and points of view multiply, the listener begins to truly appreciate how talented the narrators are in using pacing, inflection, and accents to thoroughly transform themselves. And that transformation is the key to Reiken’s novel, which combines narratives across space and time to unlock the Holocaust mystery at the heart of the story. Merlington and Wilson expertly unravel that mystery through their consistently nuanced characters. M.O. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2010]
