Conan Doyle’s diverse interests and areas of expertise (the grotesque, occult, diabolical traps, inexplicable disappearances, murder and madness) are featured in this collection. The narration perfectly recreates the speech of the era; John is at once judgmental and poetic while using a scary voice when appropriate. His American accents are realistic, avoiding the exaggeration sometimes adopted by British readers. Since this is a period piece, the audio format captures the listener’s attention better than reading in print. Lovers of good suspense, as well as wordsmiths, will enjoy.
