Francesco Clark, founder of the Clark's Botanicals skin care line, tells about his physical and emotional recovery from a paralyzing spinal cord injury. Kirby Heyborne's re-creation of Clark's voice sounds generally hopeful, with a gentle leavening of humor. Even so, the frustrations of not being able to eat in the days after the injury and of dealing with insensitive therapists are tangible in Heyborne's voice. Heyborne's reading is quiet, but the power of Clark's optimistic message will sneak up on listeners. The memoir ends on upbeat notes as Clark's business venture gets off to a strong start and years of challenging treatment and therapy lead to the first signs of healing.
