Nearly three decades after Alice Walker published her beloved award-winning book (which also became a movie and a Broadway musical), she narrates the work. How fitting that Walker herself should give voice to these characters, whom she claims to have “channeled.” This production is eloquent, powerful, and nuanced. Walker’s deep affection for Celie, Shug, Sophie, and a wealth of others shines in every word, especially brightly during the plentiful dialogue. As Walker slips inside her narration, expertly moving among the voices of men and women, from the uneducated to the more “schooled,” listeners will feel her love for her wonderful family of characters and revel in the colorful world her words bring to life.
