ORDINARY THUNDERSTORMS

Gideon Emery begins the story of a man who stumbles upon a murder in conspiratorial tones. Adam Kindred, who makes the ill-advised decision to flee the scene instead of notifying authorities, disappears into a London underworld where he steals and begs to survive while being pursued by the police and a relentless hit man. Emery finds the dark humor that helps enliven this standard premise and seems to delight in the voices of the streets: the surly assassin, the prostitute who shelters Adam, the diverse immigrants (for whom he provides an array of accents), and the drag queen.
