A young woman is murdered in a small Southern town while the former town doctor is visiting. Reluctantly, she agrees to examine the body and gets sucked into the investigation. The most fascinating aspect of this novel is the complexity of its characters. There’s good in the worst and a touch of the devil in the best. Reader Natalie Ross is challenged by the need to differentiate six female characters. She succeeds—each is distinctive, and there’s no one-size-fits-all Southern accent here. The shifts from female to male characters are seamless. While there’s never a point where the listener is confused about who is speaking in dialogue, the sheer number of characters makes this novel a bit hard to follow.
