Based on a true story, McCrumb’s novel is centered on a trial in the 1930s. Emma, a young teacher, is accused of murdering her father. Luke Daniels subtly differentiates the story’s characters. In particular, he employs a quiet intensity for the local boy who is trying to break into journalism. Carl Jennings is determined to discover the truth of the murder and is appalled by Emma’s manipulative brother, who is running her defense and enjoying the attention. In contrast, the national press is detached, mildly bored, and concerned with whatever drama it can manufacture.
