Mystery & Suspense • 10 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2010

Based on a true story, McCrumb’s novel is centered on a trial in the 1930s. Emma, a young teacher, is accused of murdering her father. Luke Daniels subtly differentiates the story’s characters. In particular, he employs a quiet intensity for the local boy who is trying to break into journalism. Carl Jennings is determined to discover the truth of the murder and is appalled by Emma’s manipulative brother, who is running her defense and enjoying the attention. In contrast, the national press is detached, mildly bored, and concerned with whatever drama it can manufacture. Daniels presents all the characters with a cool restraint that lets listeners draw their own conclusions. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2010]
