Anne Tyler's subject is always the workings of love amidst human frailty. In Ian Bedloe, the "saint" of the title, she has created one of her most interesting and heroic characters. George Guidall tells this story as if he knew and loved these people. He reads slowly, inviting the listener in; he reads carefully, so that none of the nuances of feeling or meaning can be missed. He does a wonderful job in creating each character, undaunted by differing ages, genders and nationalities. He is totally successful with the voices of the child characters. This is a beautiful story and Guidall more than does justice in the telling. E.J.M. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB 94]
