Scholars of medieval history will find this a thorough and intelligent portrait of the noble warrior and philosopher who led the Muslim army to victory over the Christian Crusaders. Although the book is exhaustive in the multitude of names and dates provided, McCue's soothing pace and clear narration prevent it from being exhausting.
