Absorbed in this well-written narrative, one might think that “Radio Reader” Dick Estell is on the air. The audio styles of narrator Jeff Riggenbach and Estell are similar: deep professional voices, matter-of-fact approach, crisp intonation with no stumbling, one sentence linked to another in an even flow. Riggenbach’s advantage is a slightly faster pace. Texas great Sam Houston is an interesting biographical subject, and his character comes through the tumultuous events of the mid-1800’s with fair clarity, especially in the later stages of his life as he argues against secession and civil war. This is both good history and good listening. D.W. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: DEC 93]
