SARTORIS

George Guidall's performance of Sartoris is exquisite. An early Faulkner work, it introduces most of the story lines that were developed further in later novels. Essentially it is the story of young Bayard Sartoris's rush to fulfill the crushing fate of his war-shattered and doomed legacy. With artistic intelligence and beautifully expressive voices, Guidall interprets the bitter pain and alleviating humor of a Southern world in eclipse. Guidall takes the fear out of experiencing Faulkner. Let's hope more take on the challenge of performing this American Shakespeare. P.W.
