Contemporary Culture • 11.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1994

The choice of a deep baritone for a book focused on race and culture is fitting as it suggests solemnity and sophistication. Tom Weiner’s voice comes through as ethnically neutral, and that could also work well for some listeners. Weiner’s deliberate pace and clear enunciation help one digest the vast ground the text covers—from ancient Rome to the contemporary U.S. However, his narration could use some variety as the lack thereof and his somewhat staccato diction sound slightly impersonal.
