Lillian Beckwith's twenty-year resi dence in the Hebrides and her know ledge of and fondness for the local families are very apparent in this book. Hannah Gordon's reading adds another wonderful dimension. Gordon captures the rough and hearty nature of the people's speech, as well as the sim plicity and humor of rural life in the Hebrides. We easily visualize the char acters' looks and their surround ings during the course of an island year. She uses Gaelic words and phrases with ease, offering listeners the benefit of correct pronunciation--how many of us would know "ceilidh" sounds like "kay-lee"?
