In this third installment of an urban fantasy series set in San Francisco and in the fairylands of Blind Michael, Toby is working hard to rescue a number of children who have been taken. Mary Kowal is adept at bringing the characters alive and drawing out the humor and determination that run through even their darkest moments. Her tone for this first-person story is that of a chum recounting some unusual events she takes in stride. Kowal makes the extraordinary commonplace but also allows the strong emotions of the characters to come through.
