Mystery & Suspense • 18 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2010

Harlan Coben introduces PLAY DEAD with the candid admission that he has not read the book in 20 years—then he gently suggests that his fans ignore it, too. The book is as promised: a flawed first novel that only hints at the author's abilities. One redeeming feature is the opportunity to listen to Scott Brick. His smooth voice and talent for understated intensity advance the plot while helping to differentiate clichéd characters—and give them some depth. Brick’s portrayal of an Aussie sheriff is particularly convincing. Coben fans will also appreciate the stark contrast between this work and later novels. The best analysis, however, is offered by the author himself when he suggests, "Grab another. It's OK. I'll wait." M.O.B. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2010]
