[Editors' Note: The following is a combined review of ROOMS and BOOK OF DAYS]--The author's capable narration presents two suspenseful novels featuring characters who are facing down personal demons. ROOMS is an emotional story of life-altering choices, and BOOK OF DAYS recounts a son's fear of inheriting his father's Alzheimer's disease. Speaking in a strong, deep voice, Rubart starts ROOMS with an easygoing narration that soon changes to tones of mystery when a house on the Oregon coast takes on a secret life of its own. In BOOK OF DAYS Rubart’s pace slows as a father warns a young man to "find the book of days" minutes before he dies. The action of both novels comes near the end when Rubart's even pace switches to short, punchy sentences.
