SELECTED SHORTS CELEBRATES BASEBALL

"It breaks your heart..." begins the late Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti in his sonorous reading of his classic The Green Fields of the Mind. Giamatti's reading is one of the works recorded at Symphony Space which reflect the many facets of baseball. He and author Roger Angell host the readings. The live recording enhances the atmosphere with its errors and crowd noises. Play-by-play is in Angell's rhythm as he presents his "Game Six." Stephen Lange captures the joy and humor of the game in his rendering of Garrison Keillor's "Attitude." And Giamatti introduces Jack Davison's reading of John Updike's "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" with much humor. A comfort to the ears and mind after a sad year without a World Series.
