A killer is loose in New York, horribly mutilating bodies in the same style as “The Carver,” who has been dormant for five years. Ex-cop Frank Quinn, back in his fifth novel by Lutz, is hired by a young woman who is seeking to find the killer of her sister, a victim of “The Carver” five years earlier. The story is multilayered with a suspenseful, twisting plot. Scott Brick is a master narrator, although at times in this reading his pauses and tonal patterns seem overly dramatic. Lutz’s writing is impeccable, and his characters are rich, giving Brick the opportunity to capitalize on the clever interplay among the diverse characters.
