To paint the American Revolution as a movement having nothing to do with religion is unfair to the people of faith who were behind it. But to paint the religion of the Founding Fathers as uniformly evangelical is equally unfair. The cause of freedom united both evangelicals and rationalists. Freedom from both Britain and from an established church brought them together. This idea is at the core of this work. The writing is scholarly, although not labored. Mark Coffin offers an able reading, but the author’s studied approach makes for a daunting task. Coffin varies his tone and pacing to enliven the material, and in no way is he artificial in his emphasis. But the weight of the subject matter and the book’s length makes it difficult to become fully engaged in the audio experience. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2011]
