TORIES Fighting for the King in America's First Civil War

by | Read by Jeremy Gage

History • 14 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2010

The author claims that the American Revolution should be called a civil war, due to the reality that even among Colonial families loyalties were divided. While jumping from skirmish to skirmish, some listeners may feel overwhelmed with the minute detail and lose the big picture. Since the information comes from many primary sources, the history is eclectic. Establishing continuity gets little help from narrator Jeremy Gage. Gage pauses so long between sentences that he makes each one sound like a stand-alone point. He speaks in American Theater Standard speech, a style more appropriate for Shakespeare than for uneducated men shooting at each other in the woods. And because Gage inflects words by raising and lowering his volume, too many of them get lost. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2011]
