In this first of four books in the Shadowmarch series, 15-year-old Briony and her twin brother, Barrick, are in the unenviable situation of learning to rule Southlands after the capture of their father and the death of their older brother. It's hardly a time for inexperienced rulers as the kingdom is faced by foes on all sides. Narrator Dick Hill is at his best in this long book, which has a complex plot and a large number of characters. Hill is generally a calm narrator who maintains a steady pace.
