Kevin Free’s African-American rhythms and lyrical dialect enliven the first-person point of view of 15-year-old Joseph Flood. Joseph’s father is far away in Iraq, and his mother is sinking further into drug abuse. Free infuses Joseph’s simple, straightforward narrative with the complexities that come from living in a homeless shelter and trying to re-create himself in a stable school while attempting to help his crack-smoking mother and control the effects of her excesses on him. Free’s reading portrays Joseph’s conflict over feeling responsible for a mother who acts more like an adolescent than he does and craving the consistency and love his aunt and uncle want to provide.
