SMALL FAITH, GREAT GOD

Sermons are intended for listening, as James Adams’s narration of N.T. Wright’s book, created out of a series of sermons, shows. This classic from 1978 comes alive as Adams captures the well-known preacher’s cadences. Two chapters especially shine: the careful investigation of biblical text, “Faith in a Great God,” and the passionate passages of “Faith to Walk in the Dark.” Particularly vivid are Wright’s interpretations of biblical women, Naomi, Ruth, Elizabeth, and Mary, as voiced by Adams. He seamlessly delivers scripture citations—essential for the listener following along in the Bible—startles with upside-down parables like the Pharisee and the Publican, and persuades the listener to let old sermons and older stories make a difference in contemporary life.
